Hyejin Jo, who has been active based on sculpture media, developed “Migrating Typeface” by collecting the handwriting of immigrants living in Korea twice in 2018 and 2020. The work is to mark the words that migrants hear and use the most in Korean life, favorite sentences, and family names in their native language and Korean, leaving traces of migrant participants while containing all the sounds of Korean. Some sentences are left in writing. This <Migrating Typeface_Learning Gangneung>(2022) is an extension of “Migrating Typeface” and is a task to add handwriting to the existing typeface of text conversation between the author and the migrants living in Gangneung. Those who experience Gangneung before the author and use it as their living base represent Gangneung. Through this work, the artist delivers the microscopic experience of Gangneung, which each immigrant passed, to the visitors.
